Tessellations and Art
As part of the unit on "Fantasy and Dreams", students studied the art of M.C. Escher, a Dutch artist , who lived from 1898-1972. Escher created two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork using mathematics and imagination. His work centered on fantastic illusions and dream images. His art was strongly influenced by the strong sunlight of the Italian coast, and the Arabian mosaics patterns in the Spanish Alhambra. Students made conscious choices of media and technique for expressive purposes and created multiple artworks, which explored ideas about their world. The software program Tessellation Exploration allowed students to use the computer and build a knowledge base for art production, and create tessellations in the style of M.C. Escher.
